Ageing Skin

What is premature ageing?

Premature aging could be linked to many factors around us, such as sun exposure, cold weather; we effortlessly speed up the process just by getting a tan or going out in the cold. Smoking and drinking also play huge roles in terms of speeding up the aging process, such as smokers developing lines around the mouth, lines on the forehead due to the skin being deprived of its nutrients and oxygen.

What happens to the skin when we age?

The skin begins to lose its elasticity, resulting in sagging, wrinkles, age spots and changes in pigmentation begin to increase and this is also due to sun exposure as well as hormonal changes. Your face is what you wear every day, so why not take care of it.

What can I do to slow down the ageing process?

Ageing is inevitable but in order to help slow down the process you can try many different treatments, whether that is injectables, skin peels or even take a holistic approach and see what other factors could be causing you to speed up the ageing process  such as alcohol, smoking, poor diet etc.

Change your diet, look after your skin, use the right products and take into account that whatever goes into your body takes effect on your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you first notice the signs of ageing?

The first sings of ageing appear around the eyes also known as crow’s feet. The upper lip and nose area would have fine lines developing.

The 7 sings of ageing are

  • Crows feet
  • Dark circles
  • Puffy eyes
  • Sagging skin
  • Pigmentation
  • Visible pores
  • Acne

Why do lines and wrinkles form on my face?

As we age, our bodies slow down and stop the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen helps keep our skin firm and supple, whereas, elastin is the stretchy, fibrous element which helps our skin to ‘snap back’ after movement.

So, constant repetitive movements such as squinting and smiling can lead to the lines and wrinkles.

Does mental health have an impact on ageing?

Yes. Stress ages you faster as it shortens the DNA telomeres, when the structure weakens it results in the cells aging faster and dying. Stress has an impact on causing premature wrinkles and also causes the collagen in ones skin to break down which loses the elastin.

What do you recommend I do for ageing skin?

There are lots of different ways to help improve Ageing though it helps to determine the cause first.

You can use these basic steps to help:

  1. Exfoliate to increase skin cell turnover,
  2. Strengthen the dermal matrix of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid,
  3. Reduce Hyperpigmentation and discolouration,
  4. Optimise hydration levels within the skin,
  5. Protect with Antioxidants,
  6. Protect against UV rays.

What else do I need to know?

There is very little downtime with Skin Peels and Microneedling, though this will be discussed with you. An aftercare kit is given post treatment which is to be used as instructed.
