A frequently asked question in our medical aesthetics clinic is "How Soon After Fillers Can You Wear Makeup?" A lot of our patients wear makeup daily and want to know how their injectables (be it Botox, Fillers, or Profhilo) will affect that.
The good news is dermal filler injections have no major recovery requirements or time.
However, you do need to use caution after the procedure to let the filler settle and promote the best results.
Sometimes after filler injections, your injector may advise you not to apply or wear makeup for a specific amount of time.
In some cases, you can apply makeup on the same day in some cases you might have to wait a while longer.
Here are some general recommendations to guide you on how to go about doing your makeup, before and after getting an injectable.
(1) Arrive for your appointment with a clean face – preferably without any makeup
Your skin deserves to be noticed, and this begins with a detailed facial assessment and skin analysis. Because of this, it’s essential to have clean skin before your cosmetic injectables treatment.
By removing your makeup, you’ll provide a blank canvas on which you can craft the look you desire. Because every face is unique, only a consultation with an expert can guarantee a look that reflects your inner beauty.
When you arrive for your appointment, having clean skin helps your injector craft your bespoke facial aesthetic treatment plan.
(2) Plan to avoid wearing make-up for at least 12-24 hours after your injectable treatment
Some people will want to apply products immediately after their treatment. This is not a wise choice.
Your skin needs time to heal and recover. Most importantly, you’ll want to minimize your risk of infection and let your skin settle completely.
For that reason, we recommend taking at least 12-24 hours off from all products on your face (water and gentle soap-free cleansers are ok), whether they are medically recommended or not.
We call this an “active downtime” from skincare and makeup. You might want to think of it as an excuse to stay home and relax for a day or two.
Minimal touching of your face also means there's a low risk of disrupting the filler before it settles fully in the skin tissue.
Especially if you received a particularly malleable filler, you will want to not touch the area until it settles.
(3) Apply minimal amounts of makeup the next day
Indeed, makeup can be useful for concealing your spots — but makeup can also suffocate your skin, depending on its ingredients.
So it can never be said enough, always select your makeup carefully.
This might also be a great time to treat yourself to some fresh, clean new makeup, and make sure you clean your brushes to avoid any chance of bacterial cross-contamination after your injectables treatment.
If you're looking for a natural-based alternative to a regular foundation, a mineral foundation is a perfect choice. You can also check out organic beauty products that are available at reasonable costs.
(4) An injectable treatment might change up your standard makeup routine (in a good way)
The best thing about getting injectables is that they emphasize the naturally beautiful dimensions and contours of your face. In fact, injectables can bring out your best features, reduces your wrinkles, make you look younger and even improve your skin tone by hydration.
This might be the perfect time to try out some of those makeup techniques you've watched on your favourite YouTube makeup channel. There definitely are ways to make the results of your injectables session ‘pop’ even more using makeup. So after your treatment, you can make the most of your new facial contours by highlighting your higher cheeks, outlining more prominent lips or using shadowing to emphasize wider eyes. Whatever your preferred look is, don't be afraid to experiment as you enjoy your new refreshed look.
You'll notice the time you spend doing makeup go down as there's less to hide (ahem under eye circles). Who doesn't want to look more glamorous while spending less time in front of your vanity mirror?
(5) Think about going au naturel – not wearing any makeup at all!
Here at Dr Aesthetica, we want your best accessory to be your own face! Because no makeup looks as good as beautiful, natural skin if it’s at its best! We know, for many of us that's unimaginable. But it's nonetheless doable.

Always Take Care and Be Cautious with Injectables
Always remember that having cosmetic injectables, such as anti-wrinkle injections or Profhilo, is really a medical procedure. It should be noted that several factors are absolutely critical to a safe and successful outcome. Some of these include sterile injecting conditions, the use of high-quality products, and the competence of your injector.
In our practice, we take many precautions to reduce any potential downsides. These could include things like infections, skin reactions, potential bruising, or damage to tissues. Injectables are profound treatments that have completely transformed the beauty landscape.
