Gummy Smile

A 'gummy smile' is a widespread condition that affects around 15% of adults and causes many people to be self-conscious and anxious when smiling.

What is a Gummy Smile?

A Gummy Smile is a term used to describe the condition where a significant portion of the gums are on show when you are smiling. While what exactly qualifies as a 'gummy smile' may differ from person to person, the general consensus is that a smile will usually be perceived as gummy when three millimeters or more of gum tissue shows.

What Causes A Gummy Smile?

There are a number of reasons why you may have a gummy smile. For one, it could simply be down to genetics, where your upper lip is slightly shorter. As a result, you will naturally show more gums when you smile. Similarly, you could have been born with your maxilla somewhat protruded (this is the upper jaw that holds your teeth in place)

The muscle that controls your upper lip movement could be hyperactive, causing your upper lip to rise higher than normal, resulting in a gummy smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get rid of my Gummy Smile?

With our Gummy Smile treatment at Dr. Aesthetica, we can correct your gummy smile and, most importantly – give you your confidence back. Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) injections offer an effective non-surgical treatment to reduce the appearance of gummy smiles. Botox relaxes specific muscles around your mouth to stop your gums from showing when you smile. And the best part is you don't need any surgery whatsoever; in fact, you could be back at work the same day.

What should I expect during the treatment?

An average appointment for this treatment usually lasts around 30 minutes. You will start to see results in a few days, with optimal results usually seen around the 2-week mark after the treatment.

Also, it's worth noting that treatment for a Gummy Smile is generally pain-free. There's also an option for a numbing cream to be used on the area if you are concerned about any discomfort.

Side effects such as bruising, swelling, and bleeding tend to be very rare with this procedure.

The results of treating a gummy smile with Botox tend to last between 3 and 6 months but may last even longer depending on your skin's natural genetic make-up.
