What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles (pores) become blocked with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. This often results in symptoms such as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples or spots.

Anybody can get Acne at any stage in their life, from adolescent age right up to old age. This can cause embarrassment or make a person feel shy or anxious.

What Causes Acne?

There are 3 major factors that contribute to Acne:

  • Hair follicles (pores) are blocked by dead skin cells.
  • Overproduction of sebum.
  • Build up of P.Acne bacteria in the pores resulting in inflammation.

For example, the follicle wall may bulge and produce a whitehead or a pore gets congested with bacteria and oil and forms a blackhead.

Treatment for Acne: Microneedling/ Skin peels/ Homecare

Acne can be treated with skin peels, Microneedling or homecare. Acne occurs when hair follicles (also known as pores) become blocked with dead skin and oil, leading to whiteheads, blackheads or spots. Treatments such as Microneedling and skin peels help turn over new skin cells and help eliminate any dead skin cells by reducing the pore size and stimulating new tissues, and restoring the skin texture and tone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Adult Acne Real?
Yes, adults get Acne. Some adults continue to get Acne well into their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. “I’m not a teenager anymore, why do I still have acne?!” This is a question we hear from patients frequently. It is even possible to get Acne for the first time as an adult. For example, some women experience acne breakouts for the first time during menopause. This is likely due to a drop in estrogen levels or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone, causing the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum. Fortunately, there are treatments for adult acne.
Does food cause Acne?
Contrary to popular belief, there’s no scientific proof that eating chocolate, sugar, or greasy food causes Acne. That said, some people do find that their breakouts get more severe when they eat too much of a particular food. If you’re one of them, it’s worth trying to cut back on that food to see what happens.
