How Do Mid Face Fillers Work?

Last Modified: August 3, 2022

As you grow older, you may no longer recognise the face you thought you knew so well. But it's not just the ageing process that affects the way your skin behaves. Sun exposure and other harsh elements, as well as genetic predispositions, can change your appearance in a way you don't like!

The skin covering your cheekbones and the underlying tissue begins to recede. You may notice a lack of tone or a general thinning of the tissue. Your cheeks may lose their suppleness and become more vulnerable to gravity.

As your cheeks move down towards your mouth, the fat pads under your lower eyelids also begin to droop. This movement can lead to the development of dark circles under the eyes.

When your skin loses volume, you may look older than you feel. A great remedy is getting mid-face fillers such as cheek fillers. These popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures add volume and fullness to the face. To perform these treatments we use uses a biocompatible dermal filler to add fullness and restore structure to the skin where it is lacking.

Ideal Patients for Mid Face Fillers

Patients who get a mid-face cheek lift are usually 40 years or older and have severe wrinkles or sagging skin that they are unhappy with. Others simply want to restore the youthful appearance or the high cheekbones they had in their teens and twenties.

Sometimes this procedure is combined with tear trough filler to correct that "tired" look that no amount of sleep can cure.

Patients should be in good physical and health condition. They should also be open and share any allergies or medications they are taking with their injector. This minimises the risk of adverse side effects from the filler.

It's also critical to have realistic goals for the mid-face filler treatment or any non-surgical cosmetic treatment. They should request their injector to explain what they should expect from the procedure and what its limitations are.

If you smoke, it might also be the perfect opportunity to quit smoking. Studies show that smoking doesn't immediately undo the benefits of a mid face filler treatment, but it will have an adverse impact over time and tends to shorten the positive effects.

The Mid-Face Volumizing Filler Procedure

Well-trained aesthetic doctors can do a lot for the face with the help of filler injections. One of the most effective anti-ageing treatments is the mid face volumising filler treatment.

When injected, this gel-like filler can help restore the facial volume that had diminished over the years. For example, hyaluronic acid fillers like Intraline are used to restore the roundness and plumpness to the cheeks as well as conceal dark circles or hollowness in the under-eye region.

Several injections are made at each site to ensure that the filler is evenly distributed throughout the tissues. The total amount injected varies from patient to patient.

Patients in their 50s are more likely to need more filler to add volume or lift their cheeks, than patients in their 40s or 30s.

Older patients are also probably concerned about reducing sagging skin and severe wrinkles. In these cases, a combination of mid face fillers and radio frequency skin tightening is the best approach.

How To Get the Best Results

Getting a mid-face dermal filler is considered a low-risk procedure.

The most common reaction to any injection is some bruising and mild swelling in the injection site. However, there have been some rare cases where a patient has had an adverse reaction.

Then there are instances where the patient may find that the result is not what they envisioned.

Talk to your doctor before undergoing a cosmetic treatment to discuss the risks and your expectations. Remember, if you choose an injector with a lot of experience, you will reduce the risk of adverse side effects or disappointments.

During the initial evaluation, the patient and aesthetic doctor need to discuss goals and realistic expectations. Patients who have reasonable expectations paired with expert injectors equals satisfaction.
