Everything You Need to Know About Lip Enhancement Surgery

Last Modified: August 6, 2022

Are you dissatisfied with the appearance of your lips? Have you ever wished to enhance them somehow and give them a vibrant look?

You're not the only one! The demand for lip enhancements has increased. You could even say this is due to the trend set by celebrity Kylie Jenner, known for her plump and fuller lips among other things.

As of 2017, the number of non-intrusive lip enhancements (especially using hyaluronic acid fillers) increased by 4%. This is an increase from 2,012,672 back in 2016 to 2,091,476 in 2017.

The popularity of these treatments has increased and may continue to do so. But before you go for such a procedure, there might be some factors and risks that you may need to take note of.

Here are things you need to know about lip enhancement.

1. What is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a procedure capable of giving you fuller lips. The most used method to administer the augmentation is by injecting dermal fillers. These fillers come in many types, which may range from collagen to hyaluronic acid.

In this case, hyaluronic acid fillers are the most common filler variant used. This is evident in the fillers used today. The reason lies in how it is a natural substance produced by the body, found as fluid in the eyes and joints.

2. Uses and Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Using hyaluronic acid fillers for lip injections can provide you with certain benefits. It adds shape, structure, and volume to improve the appearance of your lips. Using such fillers provides doctors better control over lip volume. Also, they can administer the treatment at a gradual pace.

There is also less bruising and swelling compared to other dermal fillers. As for bumps formed due to lip movement, those are easy to dissolve.

Another benefit derived from using hyaluronic acid fillers is that they are long-lasting. These fillers are also unlikely for patients or subjects to be allergic to.

3. Are Lip Fillers Safe?

There are risks and side effects that would come with lip augmentation. As such, the procedure is best performed by experienced and qualified doctors.

Let the doctor know of any allergies that you may have. This allows them to guarantee your safety. At most, hyaluronic acid fillers are natural and safe.

Before starting any procedures required for the treatment is a full medical examination. Along with professional before and after photos to enable tracking of results. There will also be treatments and reversal agents prepared if required.

4. Are There Any Side Effects?

There are side effects that come with lip injections. Fortunately, these are temporary and may last for a few days.

Still not sure what kind of side effects you could experience? These side effects include the following:

  • Bruising and swelling.
  • Redness, and tenderness at injection points.
  • Some bleeding from these injection sites.

Other serious side effects may include:

  • Prolonged and severe swelling lasting up to 10 days.
  • Lumps and irregularities.
  • And even ulceration of the lip.

If you encounter extreme swelling or develop a fever because of this, call your doctor immediately.

5. Lip Augmentation Costs and Insurance

The costs for the lip enhancement treatment would vary. This depends on the fillers used and the procedure conducted.

There are further details on these lip fillers and their detailed pricing. For more information on the costs, you may need to contact the administering clinic. They will provide you with the exact values for the treatment.

However, be aware that most health insurance plans would not cover cosmetic surgery. Or any complications related to cosmetic treatments. Take note of these details before you proceed.

6. Is Lip Enhancement Right For Me?

Before going for the procedure, check yourself first. Only choose to go for this procedure if you want to change your appearance. If your reason is to make someone else happy, take a moment. Think again and re-evaluate why you want a lip enhancement.

There are a variety of reasons behind those who wish to take the lip augmentation procedure. It may be due to the lips looking wrinkled due to age. Or the appearance of the lips may need some enhancement to make them look fuller and attractive. If that is the case, you may qualify as a candidate for lip enhancement.

However, before undergoing the procedure, make sure that you are in good health. You also qualify if you are a non-smoker.

You may not qualify for the enhancement at all if you have the following:

  • If you have an active infection
  • Diabetes
  • Blood-clotting issues

With any allergic reactions that you may have, tell your doctor right away. Especially, if you have allergic reactions to lidocaine. Also inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, even herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs.

7. How Long Does The Treatment Take?

Expect the procedure to last around 30 minutes. This includes a full medical check-up. And taking of professional before and after photos. The administering of numbing cream to ensure the process is painless is also factored in the treatment time.

8. How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

On average, lip fillers may last up to 6 months. There are other factors that may affect the duration, such as sunlight exposure, how much you move around the area, or even smoking. The longest they can last may reach up to 12 months.

Have Fuller and Vibrant Lips Today!

Taking lip enhancements may be due to the fad or by dissatisfaction on how your lips look and feel.

There are risks, but there are also rewards inherent to the procedure. If you feel like your lips would need a plump and fuller look, consider having a lip augmentation procedure.
