A ‘gummy smile’ is actually very common condition that affects around 15% of adults, and for some people can cause a lot self-consciousness and anxiety when smiling.
A Gummy Smile is the term used to describe the condition where a significant portion of the gums are on show when you are smiling.
There are a number of reasons why you may have a gummy smile. It could simply be down to genetics, if your upper lip is slightly shorter then you will naturally show more gums when you smile. Similarly, you could have been born with your maxilla somewhat protruded (this is the upper jaw that holds your teeth in place)
A few other reasons such as abnormal or compensatory eruption of your adult teeth can also play a part in causing a gummy smile.
As mentioned above, there are many different ways a gummy smile can form. Most commonly it is something you are born with, but can be caused due to circumstances involving your teeth over time too.
With our Gummy Smile treatment at Dr Aesthetica, we can correct your gummy smile but most importantly – give you your confidence back.
Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) is an effective non-surgical way to temporarily reduce the activity of muscles – in the case of Gummy Smile it is injected at both sides of the junction of your nostril and nose to mouth fold.
Our Gummy Smile treatment can relax certain muscles around your mouth to stop your gums showing when you smile - without the need for any surgery whatsoever, in fact you could be back in work the same day with a perfect smile.
The treatment tends to last between 3 and 6 months, but it may last longer depending on your skin’s natural genetic make-up.
An average appointment for this treatment usually lasts around 30 minutes and you will start to see results in a week, and then optimal results can usually be seen in 2 weeks from the day of the treatment.
Also, it’s worth noting that treatment for a Gummy Smile is generally pain-free, although of course there is an option for a numbing cream to be used on the area if you want it. Side effects of bruising, swelling and bleeding tends to be very rare.
Some feel that when they smile too much of their gums are on show or their gums are simply too prominent.
