What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition that occurs when melanocytes produce too much pigmentation in the skin, resulting in dark, discoloured patches on the skin. The common area affected is the face on the cheeks, forehead and chin, but it can also occur on the arms or other parts of the body.

There are three types of Melasma:

  • Epidermal: occurs in the top layers of the skin and results in brown hyperpigmentation with well-defined borders.
  • Dermal: Occurs in the deeper layers of the skin resulting in blue-grey patches. Tanning beds that mainly use UVA rays may trigger this type of damage inside the skin.
  • Mixed: This is a combination of epidermal and dermal, resulting in brown-grey pigment.

Melasma Frequently Asked Questions

What Causes Melasma?

Although the exact cause of Melasma is unknown, doctors and researchers have been able to identify several probable causes. These include:

  • Change in hormones, particularly due to pregnancy and birth control pills. As a result, the condition affects more women than men, with onset typically between the ages of 20 and 40 years. This also the reason why Melasma is often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy” due to increased levels of estrogen and progesterone (melanocyte-stimulating hormones) during pregnancy.
  • People with darker skin tones are also generally more susceptible to Melasma since they have more melanocytes in their skin. As a result, they are more likely to develop Melasma than people with lighter complexions.
  • Like with most skin conditions, excessive exposure to the sun can lead to Melasma. The ultraviolet light from the sun can stimulate melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) in the skin called to produce more pigment. The UV light produced by tanning beds is just as bad, if not worse.
  • Genetics also has a role to play, with up to 50% of people with Melasma reporting that someone else in the family has it.

How Do I Know if I Have Melasma?

Because of its characteristic appearance, Melasma can usually be easily diagnosed through a visual skin examination. In some cases, the doctor might perform a biopsy to rule out other serious conditions. This involves removing a tiny portion of the skin for further examination in a laboratory.

How Do I Get Rid of My Melasma?

Though not harmful, Melasma causes many people to feel self-conscious due to its distinct appearance, often on the face. Melasma can also be a persistent, frustrating and difficult skin disorder that is not easy to get rid of. While there are many different treatment options available for Melasma, it’s important to get the right treatment for you. Every patient’s skin is unique and what works for one person may backfire for another. Here at Dr Aesthetica, we offer a comprehensive treatment approach that is hyper customised to an individual so as to lead to a successful outcome.

What do I need to know about Your Treatment?

While it’s possible that your Melasma will go away on its own within a few months, in some cases, a doctor’s intervention may be necessary. When you come to us, we will carry out a complete check-up of your medical history. The goal is to identify the most probable causes of your Melasma. This is the first step to treating Melasma—identifying and possibly eliminating the lead triggers. We will also recommend the appropriate topical treatments, ranging from in-office treatments such as Chemical Peels and home-based care regimens using our medical-grade skincare products from AlumierMD.

How To Choose the Right Practioner?

It’s always advisable to see a doctor as soon as possible when you see signs of Melasma. The worse it gets, the harder it will be for treatments to work.

That being said, it’s vital that you select a reputable and experienced practitioner who can provide a comprehensive treatment plan. The right doctor should be able to address your concerns or answer all your queries confidently. At Dr Aesthetica, all our practitioners are well trained and experienced in Melasma treatment plus many other skincare and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
