Bags under Eyes

Our eyes are one of the first places to suffer the effects of ageing, often creating a sunken indentation and tired-looking eyes. Dark circles can also form and in some people puffy looking bags develop under their eyes.

What are Bags Under Eyes?

As you age, the tissues around the eye area become thinner and weaker and, as a result, begin to sag. The normal fatty deposits that can be found under the eyes then drop into the lower eyelid region, causing a puffy look. The puffiness can be exacerbated by fluid retention in the under-eye area. Though rarely a sign of a serious underlying medical condition, bag under yes is a major aesthetic concern for many people. Bag under the eyes can also be attributed to other factors like stress or weight loss.

What are Tear Troughs?

These are deep indentations that form between the lower eyelids and upper cheek, casting a dark shadow below the eye. A tear trough deformity becomes more evident if you have eyelid bags. Some people have tear troughs naturally (inherited trait), while others develop a tear trough deformity with age. Tear troughs can be caused by volume loss in the cheek and/or below the eye caused by aging or lifestyle choices like smoking or poor diet.

Why do I have lines and wrinkles around my eyes?

As we age, our bodies slow down and stop the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen helps keep our skin firm and supple, whereas elastin is the stretchy, fibrous element that helps our skin to ‘snap back’ after movement. On top of that, the skin around our eyes is very thin and delicate. It loses elasticity faster than skin in other parts of the body, resulting in lines and wrinkles, which will become deeper and more pronounced over time. Most people complain that they look tired or appear tense.

Repetitive facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting, or furrowing the brow can also cause fine lines to develop around the eyes.
