The Ultimate Guide to Injectable Fillers for the Face

Injectable fillers are a popular anti-ageing option. They help soften fine lines, plump lips, and reduce dark under-eye circles. Fillers help revive your skin for a softer more youthful glow.

There's a dizzying array of injectable fillers on the market. How do you know which one is best for you? How long do they last? How do they work?

Are you considering injectable fillers for the face?

Read the following handy guide for more information about this subject.

Injectable Fillers for the Face

Ageing begins as early as our 20s, although most people won't be aware of it until their 30s. As ageing sets in, the hydration and skin elasticity of youth disappears. Fine lines, wrinkles, and skin sagging are the result.

Topical creams, serums, and gels aren't as effective at skin penetration as fillers. That's why you'll see better results from fillers than even the most expensive skin creams.

Injectable fillers for the face are given through needles. Sometimes results are almost instant. Youthful facial volume is restored to the lips, cheeks, chin, and jawline. The under-eye areas look younger after facial fillers.

Don't confuse injectable fillers with Botox. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. Fillers are substances that add volume underneath the skin. This plumps the skin so wrinkles disappear.

There are several different types of fillers. Consult a licensed doctor for the best treatment option for you.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid fillers are some of the most popular injectables. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin. There are many brand names including, but not limited to:

  • Restylane Refyne
  • Restylane Defyne
  • Restylane Silk
  • Restylane-L
  • Restylane Lift
  • Juvederm Voluma XC
  • Juvederm XC
  • Juvederm Ultra XC
  • Juvederm Volbella XC
  • HylaForm
  • Prevelle Silk
  • Belotero

These fillers correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles. The injections penetrate the mid-to-deep dermis. Each filler targets a specific area. For instance, some fillers are for adding volume to the lips.

Other fillers work best for the backs of the hands. Fillers such as Belotero are used for softening the nasolabial fold. These folds are also known as "smile lines." The folds run from the nose down to the corners of the mouth.

Juvederm Volbella XC adds volume to the lips. It's also used on periorbital rhytids.

Discuss which concerns you have with your doctor. He'll recommend the correct injectable filler for your problem area.

Collagen Fillers for Wrinkles

Collagen also occurs naturally in the skin. The early collagen fillers were made from cow collagen. The results were short, lasting only about a month. Newer synthetic collagen fillers are now available.

Allergic reactions were common with the early collagen fillers that derived from cows. Although some collagen fillers still come from cow collagen, the processing has changed. Newer fillers cause fewer allergic reactions.

Some of the collagen injectables include:

  • Cosmoderm
  • Evolence
  • Fibrel
  • Zyderm
  • Zyplast

Some people prefer collagen fillers because they feel the results appear more natural. Collagen injectable fillers for the face don't provide the same long-lasting results as some of the other fillers.

Synthetic Fillers

There aren't as many synthetic fillers as there are hyaluronic acid fillers. They're called synthetic because they are man-made substances. Nothing in these injectable fillers occurs naturally in the skin.

The plus with synthetic fillers is they're longer lasting than their hyaluronic acid counterparts.

Synthetic fillers include:

  • Bellafill
  • Radiesse
  • Sculptra
  • Silicone

Radiesse is approved for adding volume to the backs of the hands. Sculptra works for signs of facial fat loss.

Autologous

Autologous wrinkle fillers involve removing fat from your own body first. The fat comes from another area on your body, such as the buttocks, thighs, or stomach. The fat undergoes a treatment process.

This means you'll need two procedures. The first procedure removes the fat. The second procedure is for injecting the fat back into your body. The results of an autologous procedure are often semi-permanent.

Another autologous treatment involves taking your blood first. The blood is then treated and injected into the face.

Side Effects and Risks

Wrinkle fillers are quite safe. But with all medical treatments, there are sometimes side effects. An allergic reaction is a potential side effect of any type of medication injected into the skin.

The most common side effects from fillers are bruising, swelling, and redness. These happen at the site of the injection.

Sometimes small bumps appear under the skin that usually go away on their own. In rare cases, the bumps need surgery for removal.

Synthetic fillers have the most risk when it comes to disfigurement. Minimize your risks by using a licensed doctor.

A spa may sound good but limit your spa treatments to facials and massages. Some people have at-home parties offering injections at a discounted rate. Never get an injectable at home!

Always get your injectable from a licensed doctor's office. Don't be afraid to ask for the doctor's source. Only use fillers purchased from the maker.

Length of Results

Results and length of results vary for each person. Results also vary depending upon the treatment and product.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can last as long as a year or even two. Some evidence shows that less filler is needed for the same results the longer the products are used. Synthetic fillers last longer.

Autologous procedures are often called permanent or semi-permanent. But they still often require several procedures.

Look Better, Feel Better

Injectable fillers for the face are a great way to look and feel better. Increased facial volume and glowing skin are some of the results. When you look your best, you feel your best.

Always use a certified medical doctor when undergoing any procedure. Make sure you know where the product was purchased. Don't make the mistake of using a spa because they're offering a good deal.

Saving a few pounds isn't worth the risk to your health and the potential negative side effects!

Discuss your specific concerns with your doctor. He'll know the product that best addresses your issues. Are you ready for injectable fillers for your face? Give us a call and set up an appointment today!

review rating 5  Really happy with the overall experience I’ve received and also with the results. The clinic is very clean and professional looking and the staff are informative and friendly. I’m not great with needles but was put at ease, the treatment (Botox) was also comfortable. I will be returning.

review rating 5  An honest practitioner who wouldn’t go ahead with an invasive treatment just for the sake of profit, but who assesses the real need for the job to be done based on the psychological distress of the patient. Friendly and professional.
