What is a Chin Filler Treatment (Benefits, Costs, Side-Effects)

The chin is a predominant part of your face. It is one of the first things people see when they look at you.

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, many people have intense insecurities about the shape of their chin.

But there is good news: everyone can have a chin that they are proud of!

Today, our specialists at Dr Aesthetica have compiled an in-depth guide into:

  • What a chin filler is.
  • How it can provide the chin, you are looking for.
  • The side effects of this treatment.
  • And much more!

What are Chin Fillers?

Chin fillers are a treatment that gives added definition to your chin area and lower jawline.

The process involves injecting areas of your chin with dermal fillers made of soft tissues. Click HERE to find out more about dermal fillers.

These soft tissues are composed of a healthy combination of natural and synthetic materials.

You can use the fillers for many different purposes on your chin – filling in lines, smoothing wrinkles, strengthening the lower jawline, and balancing your chin profile.

Depending on the chin filler you get, the treatment can last for a while (Check the below section on “how long does a chin filler last” for more information).

What can getting a chin filler help you achieve?

The chin is anatomically complicated, and results depend on the area of the filler.

Nevertheless, the general benefits of chin fillers are:

  • An increased chin-length: Some people feel that their chin is relatively short to their other facial features. Hence, a chin filler works by providing an increased length to the chin.
  • An increased projection of the chin: From the side view of a face, the chin may appear short in relation to the lips. Conditions such as retrognathia and microgenia can add to the shortness of the chin.  You can attempt to determine the shortness mathematically as the angle between the eyebrows-nose-chin should fall between 165 to 175 degrees.

Once again, these metrics only come into play if you are feeling conscious about your chin and want to make a change. A chin filler can then work by increasing the projection of your chin.

  • Chin Crease Reduction: Many people often have creases on the chin or a common “C” shaped hook. This usually occurs more as we age. However, a good chin filler treatment can solve this problem.
  • Modify (increase or decrease) the width of the lower chin: Our chins usually end in a square or a rounded manner. Getting a filler can change the way our chin ends.

In general, our female patients choose a rounded chin that finishes gently. The width of the chin is similar to the distance between the inside corner of the eyes. On the other hand, our male clients prefer to have a square finish on their chin. This is often associated with “masculinity”.

  • Remove chin dimples: Many people do not enjoy having dimples. Therefore, a chin filler treatment can help with removing the dimples.

Some people may want to decrease the amount of dimpling rather than removing the dimple altogether. This is possible as well.

Should I get a chin filler treatment?

In general, the following measurements can give you an idea of the development of your chin and whether it is a good idea to use a chin filler:

  • Measure the distance from the chin to the space between your lower and upper lips. This distance is usually twice the distance from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the lip.
  • Take a picture of the side profile of your face. Ask yourself, do I feel comfortable with all aspects of my face?

Some common analysis points include the analysis of the crease of your face and the stopping point of your chin in relation to the lips.

Ultimately, the choice comes down to your image of self beauty and should not adhere to any arbitrary rules.

How long do the results last?

Depending on the injection you take, results can last up to 1-1.5 years. Most of the process is reversible; however, some types of fillers may require surgery.

Always consult your doctor before taking any such medical actions.

Does this treatment hurt?

Receiving a chin filler injection can be a bit painful; however, many people feel minimal to no pain during this treatment.

Some dermal fillers are mixed with additional substances that make the treatment more comfortable.

Your skin specialist may also apply some local anaesthetics via a cream or an injection to make the whole process more comfortable.

The procedure of a Chin Filler

Still unsure of whether to receive a chin filler or not?

The following text will describe the procedure you will go through while getting a filler in a professional clinic.

It is of hope that by reading this, you will be more informed on the processes and make an informed choice.

Always consult your doctor for more information.

Choosing the correct doctor

You should be aware of the two following points when choosing a doctor for your chin filler treatment:

  • Fillers can have varying quality:  There are a lot of fillers available on the market. Unfortunately, each of these injections can vary in quality, and some may produce unsatisfactory results.

At Dr Aesthetica, all our dermal fillers use the Juvederm formula (hyaluronic acid) or Radiesse formula (calcium-based). You can find more information in the upcoming sub-section.

  • Not all chin filler specialists have the proper training or experience: While most skin clinics can provide good quality skincare to their clients, their chin filler treatments can lack quality without consequence.

In the UK, all filler treatments are categorized as non-invasive and hence unregulated by the government. To put it simply, anyone can provide this treatment.

However, a lousy chin filler does more harm than good. Therefore, you must find a good clinic. Make sure to check for the practitioner’s experience, certifications and reviews.

At Dr Aesthetica, our doctors have years of experience and are certified (you can verify this on other official websites). With over 130+ positive reviews, you are assured to be in safe hands with us.

Consultation

Regardless of which expert you choose, the procedure for chin fillers remains the same.

An initial consultation will consist of looking at your health data and personal expectations. Furthermore, you will be given more information on this treatment.

If we deem you to be eligible, we will commence with the treatment.

Your dermal fillers: Juvederm vs Radiesse.

Before we start treatment, you should understand the substance you are being injected with.

All our fillers contain either a Hyaluronic Acid (Multiple different Brands available including but not limited to Intraline, Teosyal and Juvederm) or a Radiesse solution (composed of calcium hydroxyapatite microparticles). We have written an in-depth guide into the comparison of both filler injections HERE.

Below is an excerpt from the guide about the key differences between both fillers:

  1. Hyaluronic Acid is key component in Dermal Fillers while for Radiesse its Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA). While both will provide significant results, your doctor will help decide which is best for you.
  2. Radiesse typically lasts longer than Juvederm because of its ability to increase collagen production within the skin. Most patients will notice the results of Radiesse for 18-24 months (and possibly longer) while Hyaluronic Acid results last for up to 1 year (18 months for Juvederm Voluma).
  3. Radiesse is typically more expensive than Juvederm. It’s important to note that the final cost of any dermal filler treatment can differ from one person to the next. Price factors include their unique needs and the exact amount of filler needed to accomplish their goals.
  4. Radiesse is not reversible: It’s important to note that Radiesse is Semi-permanent and therefore cannot be dissolved using Hyalase. At Dr Aesthetica, we use Radiesse on hands where it helps to hide tendons and veins and offers good volumisation.

And to give a summarized answer into which filler injection is better:

Once we assess your individual need and goals we can determine which filler is best for you. Sometimes, a patient’s ideal treatment plan may involve using both Juvederm and Radiesse to create the patient’s desired end result. In other cases, using only one filler will be sufficient.  At the end of the day, the vast majority find either Juvederm or Radiesse to be a highly effective and worthwhile treatment.

During the Chin Filler treatment

A numbing cream will be applied to your chin when you arrive at the clinic.

Your skin specialist may use the cannula technique in which a small introducer needle is injected into the chin. This acts as a pre-filler method of providing smooth contour and creating enough space for the dermal filler to go in.

The doctor then will insert the dermal filler into the desired area. The overall treatment can last around 15-30 minutes.

After-care

Congratulations! You have just taken part in a chin filler treatment. Results can be seen instantly and can continue evolving for up to 14 days after your treatment.

It is recommended to use a lightweight cold compress on your chin to help with any potential swelling or bruising.

Try to take care to avoid the following after your treatment, if possible:

  • Vigorous exercise for up to 48 hours after treatment.
  • Situations with heat, such as tanning beds. Massages or ice baths.
  • Exposing yourself to the sun (especially without sunscreen).
  • Attending any significant events for up to 6 days after treatment as swelling can randomly occur during this time.
  • Blood thinners and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

Always consult your doctor for more information.

Chin Filler Safety

Is everyone eligible for a chin filler?

Anyone above 18, who feels unhappy with their chin and does not have any medical history, can receive a chin filler.

This treatment is particularly effective for older individuals. This is because as we age, our jawbone shrinks, causing jowls and saggy necks. Therefore, a chin filler treatment can help elongate the chin and help redefine the jaw.

If you are doing this treatment as a response to ageing, make sure to account for the benefits in relation to your whole face.

Side effects

The most common treatments for chin fillers are minor bruising, swelling, bleeding and redness.

It is possible for individuals also to get some of the following side effects; however, this is quite rare. Examples include:

  • Infections on the skin.
  • Allergic reactions to one of the dermal fillers. Most perform tests before treatment to avoid this.
  • Nerve damage due to wrongly placed injections. This can result in numbness or pain.
  • Poor technique of injections can cause damage to the skin and tissue death (necrosis). In addition, you may also get bumps and lumps on the skin. All of this can be prevented by choosing an experienced practitioner.

Costs of Chin Filler

You can find all the costs of dermal fillers on the face and body on our pricing page HERE.

For chin fillers, the usual price is £350 for the complete treatment.

Combination with other treatment

It is possible to combine the chin filler treatment with other forms of dermal fillers. Below are a few examples:

  • Jawline fillers and chin fillers: A jawline filler will define the jawline and create a strong distinction between the neck and the face.
  • Cheek fillers and chin fillers: A filling of the cheek and chin can make a face look more proportional.
  • Lip Fillers and chin fillers: This is a very popular choice by patients as the filled lips complement a creaseless chin.
  • Non-surgical rhinoplasty and chin fillers
  • Chin Fillers and liposuction of a double chin: A liposuction can be used for individuals with a lot of fat under the chin. The subsequent chin is then shaped using fillers to provide the patient with a new look.

Alternatives for Chin Filler

While getting a dermal filler is non-invasive and low cost, some people may prefer a long term solution. However, this will be more expensive.

Chin implant surgery

The chin implant surgery is a permanent solution to a deep dimple or recessed chin. The treatment usually costs a few thousand pounds and is done through surgery.

If you are unhappy with the result, you can remove the implants, but another surgery will be required.

Facelift surgery

Similar to implant surgery, a facelift can treat any jowls and is a permanent solution. However, facelifts are more costly than implants and have more risks of side effects.

Skin tightening procedures

This treatment allows you to reduce wrinkles and other signs of ageing. It is usually done through laser skin resurfacing, radiofrequency skin tightening, or an ultrasound skin tightening method.
