Types of non-cosmetic Botox

Last Modified: August 8, 2024

Botox is a non-invasive treatment that involves injecting a targeted area with a substance that relaxes the surrounding muscles. The word Botox usually conjures up images of cosmetic treatments, including smoothing out frown lines and reducing gummy smiles. However, this multipurpose substance is a fantastic tool for treating a variety of conditions.

Unlike some invasive treatments, Botox is not a permanent solution. When you are ready, simply book another appointment for a top-up. Appointments usually take less than 30 minutes, while the results can be enjoyed for up to eight months.

Dr Aesthetica, who are specialists in Botox techniques, have rounded up some of the lesser-known uses of Botox that can improve quality of life.

Botox for headaches

Tension headaches and migraines can seriously impair quality of life and is an ailment that affects one in seven people worldwide. While the exact reasoning as to how Botox helps is unknown, research shows that it is a great way to treat migraines; with 70% of patients stating the number of headaches halving following treatment.

Not only does Botox reduce the number of headaches or migraines, but it also works to reduce other symptoms often associated with the ailment, including nausea, sound, light and smell sensitivity and vomiting.

Clients usually start to register the impact two weeks following treatment; however, it may take more than one appointment for it to be effective. Your consultant will be able to advise on how often you should book an appointment to ensure your treatments are as safe as possible.

Types of non-cosmetic Botox

Botox for sweating

Botox can be used as a way of treating Hyperhidrosis, which is a term used to describe excessive sweating. Although it may appear to be more of a nuisance than a life-hindering condition, that is not the case. Men and women who suffer from Hyperhidrosis have to change their clothes regularly throughout the day, often suffer low confidence levels, and are frequently uncomfortable. Not to mention the negative impact extreme sweating has on clothing.

Botox blocks the chemical in our glands that are responsible for sweat production, resulting in a 75-95% reduction in sweating. Clients note the effect between five and seven days following treatment, with optimal results reported after two weeks.

The results of Botox for Hyperhidrosis usually last between six and eight months, at which point you can simply book another appointment.

Botox for teeth grinding

People who grind their teeth, a condition known as Bruxism, often have to manage a variety of symptoms including:

  • Headaches and earaches
  • Sleep disruption
  • Jaw joint stiffness
  • Broken, worn down and/or sensitive teeth
  • Overdeveloped masseter muscles

Treatment options include investing in a mouth guard or splint; however, this is not a resolution, just a management technique. For Bruxism associated with problems relating to the temporomandibular joint, treatments involve pain medication, relaxation practices or invasive surgery. An alternative and effective solution is to invest in Botox.

Severe pain can be markedly reduced immediately following treatment, and teeth grinding can be halved one week after your appointment.

Botox for overactive bladder

Overactive bladders occur when bladder muscles contract more often than average. Individuals with overactive bladders often have to manage urine leaking, a feeling of a constant need to urinate and may even wet the bed. Not only is this extremely embarrassing, but it can also negatively impact their quality of life.

By injecting Botox into the bladder, the muscles are forced to relax, relieving symptoms. The effects of the procedure can last up to eight months following treatment, with initial results presenting within two weeks. Any additional appointments should be discussed with your consultant, who will be able to advise based on your specific situation.
