Why Hyperhidrosis is a Major Concern for Many People

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that results in abnormally excessive sweating. We often sweat during exercise or when the weather is hot to allow our bodies to cool down. But someone who has hyperhidrosis will sweat for no apparent reason even when their body doesn’t need to cool down.

Hyperhidrosis can cause discomfort and embarrassment. Often, this excessive sweat soaks through one’s clothes and drips down their hands. As a result, many men and women are forced to change their clothes every few hours. This results in significant limits to their personal style and often ruins the fabrics of their clothes. Also, due to the social stigma associated with excessive sweating(sweat odour and patches on clothes), hyperhidrosis has negatively impacted many people’s careers, social life, and self-esteem.

There is a wide range of treatments for hyperhidrosis. Still, most such as topical medications, oral medications, iontophoresis, and surgery have proven to have limited success in most patients. Also, some of these hyperhidrosis treatments have resulted in unwanted side effects. However, multiple studies have found Botulinum toxin type A injection to be an effective relief for this embarrassing condition.

About Hyperhidrosis Treatments

Using botox for positive results in under-arm sweating

What is hyperhidrosis treatment?

Hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox involves treating the affected area with injections of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox, is popularly used to treat wrinkles. In this case, it targets the sweat glands.

How does Botox get rid of excessive sweating?

When Botox is used to treat severe underarm sweating, it works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands in your armpits don’t receive these chemical signals, severe underarm sweating is greatly reduced.

How soon will I notice an improvement?

On average, it takes 5-7 days for the Botox injections to work and to cause a reduction in sweating. You can expect optimal results around 2 weeks after the treatment, by optimal results we mean, around a 75% reduction in sweating with a range up to 95% reduction. Botox injections can really work wonders! Results tend to last for 6-12 months; then another treatment will be needed.

Is there any downtime after Botox for sweating?

You will be able to drive and engage in all of your usual daily activities immediately after your injections. That said, you may develop slight bruising at the injection sites but that should clear on its own within a few days. Other than that, there will be no visible signs of your treatment.

Is there anything I need to do after my treatment?

For the first couple of hours after treatment, avoid direct sunlight exposure to the area or rubbing the treated area so as to prevent irritation. It best to avoid exercise for the rest of the day. Please also refrain from any swimming activities for 24 hours.

I’m interested in having excessive sweating treated, but will it hurt?

Many people find their procedure with Dr. Aesthetica more comfortable than they had expected. We used very fine needles to administer the injections, and our resident Botox injector has extensive experience in carrying out this procedure. The pain associated with the injections is mild and no local anaesthetic is required. We can also administer a numbing cream to ease any discomfort.

How safe is treatment for excess sweating?

Complications associated with this sweating treatment are rare. It is possible to that you will experience some mild bruising at the treatment sites, but this will fade within a few days. Additionally, it is possible that small persistent areas of sweating will require more than a single treatment to achieve the desired results. There is no risk of muscle weakness, numbness, or permanent changes in the underarm skin.

Who are good candidates for excessive sweating with Botox?

Muscle relaxing injections such as Botox are ideal for anyone who suffers from excessive sweating. You may want to consider this treatment if:

– You are embarrassed by excessive underarm sweating

– You have tried other sweating treatments without success

– You work in close contact with others (eg, hairstylists, nurses, dentists, hygienists, airline flight attendants, etc.)

– Excessive sweating has resulted in ruined clothes

Botox is a safe and effective way to treat excessive sweating. As a general rule, the best candidates will also possess good overall health and realistic expectations.
