Hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox involves treating the affected area with injections of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox, is popularly used to treat wrinkles. In this case, it targets the sweat glands.
When Botox is used to treat severe underarm sweating, it works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands in your armpits don’t receive these chemical signals, severe underarm sweating is greatly reduced.
On average, it takes 5-7 days for the Botox injections to work and to cause a reduction in sweating. You can expect optimal results around 2 weeks after the treatment, by optimal results we mean, around a 75% reduction in sweating with a range up to 95% reduction. Botox injections can really work wonders! Results tend to last for 6-12 months; then another treatment will be needed.
You will be able to drive and engage in all of your usual daily activities immediately after your injections. That said, you may develop slight bruising at the injection sites but that should clear on its own within a few days. Other than that, there will be no visible signs of your treatment.
For the first couple of hours after treatment, avoid direct sunlight exposure to the area or rubbing the treated area so as to prevent irritation. It best to avoid exercise for the rest of the day. Please also refrain from any swimming activities for 24 hours.
Many people find their procedure with Dr. Aesthetica more comfortable than they had expected. We used very fine needles to administer the injections, and our resident Botox injector has extensive experience in carrying out this procedure. The pain associated with the injections is mild and no local anaesthetic is required. We can also administer a numbing cream to ease any discomfort.
Complications associated with this sweating treatment are rare. It is possible to that you will experience some mild bruising at the treatment sites, but this will fade within a few days. Additionally, it is possible that small persistent areas of sweating will require more than a single treatment to achieve the desired results. There is no risk of muscle weakness, numbness, or permanent changes in the underarm skin.
