The 5 Most Common and Over Exaggerated Dermal Filler Myths Debunked

From hair dye, to make up, to simple cosmetic procedures, it's no secret there's a ton of beauty misconceptions out there! These myths create anxiety and harm around incredibly, useful beauty tools.

You deserve to control how you look to express yourself! When you feel like your best self you just generally feel better about life, yet these rumours may keep from going after what you want to like these easy cosmetic procedures.

This is can cause extreme anxiety around ageing since we all know to watch our faces sag and droop is hard but how do we decipher fact from fiction when it comes to beauty advice?

Dermal Fillers, for example, is the beauty tool used by celebrities, doctors, and average people alike so why are there so many dermal filler myths surrounding this simple procedure?

We all deserve a little luxury sometimes, so we're going to debunk the top 5 derma filler myths to ease your anxiety about the misinformation floating around this simple beauty tool.

1. Dermal Fillers Are Made From Toxins?

One of the most common misconceptions about dermal fillers is that they're made out of toxins, plastics, or silicone.

This is untrue, derma fillers are made from hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in your skin. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful moisturiser and can be found in many topical beauty products.

Injecting it into the skin is the only way to revitalise volume causing your skin to look plump and hydrated because these fillers are made from naturally occurring substances they degrade- looking more natural throughout time.

This procedure can also improve collagen production naturally which is beneficial since collagen production slows down as we age.

2. Will Dermal Fillers Permanently Change Your Face?

Getting dermal fillers can seem like a big decision due to the rumour that they last forever. Deciding whether you want something permanent is a huge decision in itself, but this is a dermal filler myth!

Dermal fillers are not permanent but they do have longevity. Fillers degrade in about 3-6 months, meaning after just one appointment you'll be able to walk around with glowing skin for almost half a year.

Because getting fillers can also increase the production of collagen in the skin, this will leave a long-lasting, hydrated, glow even after the fillers have dissolved.

Of course though, if you decide you can't wait 3-6 months for your fillers to naturally degrade there is a reversal enzyme! So if you don't like them your medical professional can dissolve them in an instant and you'll be back to your old self in no time.

3. Are Dermal Fillers and Botox the Same?

This is a common misconception but dermal fillers and Botox are not the same things, at all! To put it simply Botox relaxes the area while fillers add volume to an area!

Botox is a form of botulinum toxin type A, this can relax unsightly wrinkles like a furrowed brow, or laugh lines. Giving the skin a smooth and more youthful appearance.

Now, dermal fillers fill and add volume to areas that might have lost it over time like the cheekbones or chin. There are three different groups of filler: thick, medium, and thin; while Botox is all the same.

Whatever area you're focusing on will determine which group of filler to use, the thick group is used for areas which have lost the most volume while the thin group is reserved for those pesky, smaller lines and cracks.

4. Is Getting Filler Painful?

Sticking a needle in your face may seem scary and painful but most patients compare it to a mosquito bite.

The needles used for filler or Botox injections are typically very small and cause no more pain than a simple pinch if any at all. Similar to a pinch you would feel getting a regular vaccine at the doctor's.

Sometimes lidocaine can be used topically to numb the area before injections, but most doctors disregard it since it's an easy and often done practice. People who regularly get filler injections rate it a 2 on a pain scale from 1-10.

5. Dermal Fillers Create Duck Lips

Lip fillers have been a regular trend in Hollywood, and now, all over the world. It's easy to see why fillers may be used solely for lips but that's not true. Fillers can be used in the cheeks, chin, even to reshape the nose or other features.

We've all seen the famous duck lip, or trout pout bad dermal fillers can create! It's easy to exaggerate a certain feature with fillers, that's why it's important to only have this procedure done by a trained medical professional.

Unless you specifically request larger lips, a professional can create a smooth look that's proportionate with the rest of the face.

You deserve to feel good about yourself when you look in the mirror and this day and age, we have the tools to do so!

Cosmetic technology and science have advanced to ease the anxiety around these simple procedures but derma filler myths still find a way to get around.

It's important to get any cosmetic procedure done by a licensed professional who will be able to answer any questions you have. This will point you in the right direction regarding how much filler you use and where.

You deserve to look how you want with minimal stress and anxiety surrounding the procedure, whatever it may be. With a trusted physician and an idea of what you're looking for- anything is possible!
