Does Microneedling Help Remove Stretch Marks?

Last Modified: May 7, 2023

What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are those streaks or lines that you might have noticed on your skin. Stretch marks aren’t a health concern but they have a major impact on self esteem and confidence. Of course, it's important to love yourself and accept your insecurities, but making yourself feel more comfortable is also important. Stretch marks can affect both men and women.

New stretch marks are slightly raised and may be pink, red, or purple in colour, depending on your skin tone. However old stretch marks are typically flat and white or silver in colour. They most commonly appear on the:

Abdominal wall

Thighs

Upper arms

Buttocks

Breasts

How Do Stretch Marks Form?

They are like scars that develop when the skin stretches quickly, causing the collagen and elastin fibers to break apart. As a result, the skin loses its elasticity and forms those characteristic pesky lines. They may form after pregnancy, weight loss or anything else that causes the skin to stretch quickly.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling is a way of stimulating your body’s healing processes, this heals skin naturally. It makes sense that you might be wary of subjecting yourself to hundreds of micro wounds, but Microneedling is a safe way to use your body’s natural response to get rid of stretch marks.

Each micro injury created results in your body starting a healing process. This process increases your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.

The process of Microneedling for stretch mark removal goes as follows:

  • Inflammation – The skin gets pierced which triggers the immune system to disinfect the wound, extract the debris, improve the blood flow, and create tissues.
  • Proliferation – With temporary collagen and elastin, the wound rebuilds itself.
  • Remodelling – The temporary collagen gets replaced by stronger collagen that tightens the skin.

What Skin Problems Does Microneedling Address?

Microneedling helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as combat acne, dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

How Is Microneedling Done on Stretch Marks?

Your dermatologist or aesthetician will first clean the area being treated, then apply numbing cream to it to prevent pain and discomfort.

The Microneedling device will then get moved all over the treated area to create “micro injuries.”A soothing cream or serum will also get applied onto the treated area to prevent itch and dryness.

After undergoing the process, you may look like a tomato as your skin might look flushed or bright red. Don’t worry, this will fade within 48 hours after treatment.

Microneedling takes about 30-60 minutes to complete, but may take longer if it’s done on your thighs, butt, abdomen or stomach

How Often Should Microneedling Be Done on Stretch Marks?

Results last for 4-6 months but you may need 3-6 Microneedling stretch mark removal sessions throughout the year to see the full benefits of Microneedling. Combining multiple Microneedling sessions will help maximise your results!

Are There Side Effects or Risks Involved in Microneedling your Stretch Marks?

There are certain risks involved with Microneedling such as:

  • Skin irritation
  • Swelling
  • Discomfort at the site
  • Redness and bruising are common for the first 48 hours.
  • Dryness or flaking of the skin

However most of these disappear after a few days.

Is This Treatment Effective for Any Type of Stretch Marks?

Red or pink stretch marks that are new may respond better to Microneedling than older, white, or silver stretch marks. This is because newer stretch marks are still producing collagen, and Microneedling can stimulate further collagen production, which may help the skin heal and fade the appearance of the stretch marks

A recent study also showed that Microneedling stretch marks where the skin is thicker (thighs and buttocks) is more effective than where the skin is thin (like the breasts for example).
