Top Non-Surgical Options For Getting Rid of a Double Chin: Which One is Best For You?

Last Modified: July 21, 2024

A double chin is a relatively common condition that is caused by the accumulation of fat below your chin. But why does that layer of stubborn fat show up in the first place and what are the Non-Surgical Options For Double Chin? Well, this can be attributed to several factors:

Weight gain: Depending on your body type, it can be particularly easy for weight gain in your face to sneak up on you. For some, the probability of developing a double chin increase significantly if they put on extra pounds.

Genetics: Have you ever seen a skinny person with a double chin and wondered why? Sadly, if other members of your family have double chins, you're more likely to develop one.

Age: For most people, their double chins is brought about by the normal ageing process. As you grow older, your skin produces fewer collagen and elastin protein fibres which causes it to loosen and sag. This gives an illusion of a double chin.

Medically speaking, a double chin isn’t usually a sign of a health problem, That said many find it to be a bothersome facial feature that makes them feel self-conscious and insecure about their side profile. Many want to eliminate some of the fat beneath their chins and give themselves a better-defined neck.

The good news is that there are a couple of non-surgical treatments options for getting rid of a double chin or at the very least reducing its appearance.

Some treatments are great for tightening sagging skin while others are more effective for triggering fat loss under the chin.

Read on to discover which one is best for you!

Radio Frequency

Top Non-Surgical Options For Getting Rid of a Double Chin

What it is: Radiofrequency (RF) is a non-invasive energy-based treatment that uses electric currents produced through an electrode to generate electromagnetic waves. These wavelengths move at the speed of light, ensuring they do not interfere with the neuromuscular mechanism of the skin (unlike simple electrical current).

This has made it possible for radio frequency to be safely used in aesthetic practices such as skin tightening. This is a good alternative to plastic surgery which is more expensive and recovery can take a long time.

How it works: When radiofrequency is conducted through the skin, it penetrates down to the subcutaneous layers, acting as a catalyst for heat production (50–75°C) within the skin. This thermal reaction causes a short term contraction of collagen for an immediate tightening effect on the underlying skin structures.

Over and above that, it also induces the synthesis of new collagen, promoting skin tightening in the long term. Radiofrequency sessions are painless and last between 20 to 40 minutes.

Radiofrequency treatment can be combined with other aesthetic treatments like microneedling for a high impact facial treatment that targets all concerns within one session.

What to expect: This treatment has no downtime, and at most, you’ll experience some redness for up to 24 hours afterwards. Like other energy-based treatments, RF naturally requires a course of several sessions (from six to 12) and will induce benefits gradually over several months.

Overall, expect it to help lift, firm and tone the neck, minimising the appearance of a double chin. RF can also reinvigorate the skin for a healthy glow, another benefit of increased collagen.

Limitations: This treatment is not ideal for people with rosacea or skin infections, as the heat can worsen the conditions. It’s also not suitable if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Pricing: With an average cost of £200 and a recommended course of at least 6 sessions, expect the total cost to go above £1000.

CoolSculpting

non surgical treatment for double chin

What it is: This is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that gets rid of stubborn fat by freezing and eliminating fat cells through a process known as Cryolipolysis. It cools fat cells to approximately 4°C, which causes ice crystals to form inside them.

Because fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than skin or muscle cells, only your fat is affected. Over time, the dead fat cells are broken down and metabolised by the body.

How it works: This body sculpting procedure involves placing a vacuum-suction applicator on the chin area to deliver controlled cooling to the site for about 35 to 75 minutes. The skin cools quickly and goes numb after a few minutes. After the treatment, the specialist will massage the skin under your chin to help break up the frozen fat cells.

This assists the body's lymphatic system expel them, meaning you get better results quicker.

What to expect: Expect a tiny bit of bruising, swelling, and numbness for a few days after your sessionYou'll need at least two sessions to see a notable change in your chin area. Y, It takes about 3-4 months to see the full results, as your body will gradually eliminate the dead fat. Once your fat cells are killed, they won't come back, as long as you maintain a healthy weight.

Limitations: Everyone has a different biological response to the CoolSculpting technology, which means the result may greatly vary from one person to the next.

You have to have just the right amount of fat on your chin. Too much as the fat reduction won't be noticeable, too little and the applicator won't have anything to adhere to.

Also, the sensation of the Coolsculpting applicator on the chin can be quite uncomfortable for some people. Many have commented that it feels like having a hand pressed against their throat!

Pricing: The average price of CoolSculpting is £1000.

Kybella

Kybella

What it is: This is an FDA approved cosmetic injectable that is used to "melt" away fat. The main ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that breaks down dietary fat.

How it works: The technique uses very fine needles to deliver a series of injections (about 20) of Kybella into the skin beneath the chin. The product latches onto your fatty tissue and dissolves its outer cellular membrane, destroying the cell. As the fat cells die, they release their contents into the body, where they're metabolised.

What to expect: Each treatment session is spaced at least 1 month apart, and most patients are satisfied with two to four KYBELLA sessions. Once the existing fat cells disintegrate, they won't be able to store fat anymore.

As long as you don't gain excess weight in the future, you can keep your result for the long term. It's important to note that this applies largely to double chins caused by weight gain.

Limitations: Many patients complain of moderate side effects such as bruising, swelling and pain, lasting several weeks. In fact, the swelling can be pretty dramatic, resembling a "bullfrog neck" for 2 weeks immediately following treatment. People who have thyroid disorders or swollen lymph glands in their necks may not be suited for Kybella.

Pricing: The average price of a Kyabella treatment is £850.

Ultrasound Therapy

What it is: Also known as Ultherapy, this procedure uses sound waves with frequencies above humans hearing capability – hence its name, “ultra”-sound.

How it works: The ultrasound skin tightening device is able to reach 5 mm under the skin, deeper than laser. This allows the ultrasound energy to bypass the skin’s surface and penetrate deeper skin tissues. The heat produced by ultrasound waves selectively injures the skin to trigger a natural healing response. This then stimulates the production of new collagen as the skin tries to rejuvenate itself.

What to expect: The sessions are quick, lasting about 30-45 minutesAfterwards, patients will typically experience temporary flushed skin. Also, expect some mild swelling and tenderness to the touch for a few weeks.

While there may be some immediate effects, most of the neck lifting and toning occurs over the subsequent two to three months. The skin tightening effects of the treatment can last up to a year, whereby a follow-up treatment may be required.

Limitations: Ultrasound treatment is not recommended for people with active infections, open wounds or acne around their neck. It’s also unsuitable for pregnant women or people with pacemakers and other electrical medical devices.

Pricing: Most Ultheraphy treatments start at £500 per area, and the cost can quickly add to thousands of pounds if treating the whole face.
