Top Myths About Treating Dark Circles and Under-eye Hollows

Last Modified: July 14, 2024

Did you know that the skin around your eyes is up to 10 times thinner than the rest of your body? This explains why it is so prone to skin problems such as dark circles and a hollowing effect under the eyes. (also known as sunken eyes or tear troughs).
Tear troughs refer to the grooves between your lower eyelid and your cheek. These can create the illusion of dark circles around our eyes, making us look tired and more aged than we actually are

Unfortunately, there are many myths and speculations about how to effectively treat this condition. To find the right treatment, you need to make sure you have the facts straight.

In this article, we dispel the five biggest myths about treating dark circles and the appearance of sunken eyes.

Myth: Dark circles under the eyes can not be treated

Fact: Just as there are different causes of dark circles and sunken eyes, there are many different ways to treat them. Only dark circles and hollows under the eyes that you inherited from your parents can be difficult to treat.

Otherwise, dark circles are easy to treat if you find out the underlying cause and get treated accordingly.

Experts agree that dark circles under the eyes are best treated through a combination of cosmetic treatments, a healthy lifestyle and quality skin care products.

In-office treatments, such as peels, lasers and under-eye fillers, are also very effective and can have a lasting effect.

Myth: More sleep will cure your under-eye hollows

Fact: Many people assume that getting more sleep is all they need to do to get rid of their dark circles. While getting more sleep can help reduce dark circles under the eyes, it is by no means the solution.

This is because they hollows can be caused by a variety of factors.

For example, people with a genetic predisposition to dark circles and tear troughs will not gain any additional benefit from sleeping longer.

While sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, no amount of sleep can replace the loss of volume under the eyes due to other factors such as ageing and weight loss.

Myth: Surgery is the only effective option

Fact: People who have unsuccessfully tried various skin treatments often assume that surgery is the only option. However, this is far from the truth.

Dark circles and sunken eyes are caused by a loss of volume in the skin tissue under the eyes.

Therefore, non-surgical treatment options such as dermal filler injections provide an effective and safe way to treat any hollowness or wrinkles under the eye area. Hyaluronic acid filler is a simple, non-surgical, 30-min procedure with close to no downtime. And as with most fillers, results can be seen immediately!

The filler will restore the lost volume under the skin, plumping up the sunken areas and restoring contour to the eye area.

Myth: Home remedies and creams can eliminate sunken eyes

Fact: There are many home remedies and creams that claim to be able to eliminate dark circles and hollowness under the eyes. These include things like using tea bags, expensive under-eye creams and eye masks.

Though these can make you feel better immediately after the application, a while later you'll be staring in the mirror in frustration because the dark circles and wrinkles are no better.

Cold cucumber slices, for example, can constrict the prominent blood vessels and temporarily improve the appearance of dark circles.

But that's about it. The solution to dark circles under the eyes depends on first identifying the cause.

If the dark circles are due to pigmentation of the skin, a light chemical peel or microneedling treatment can help improve the skin tone under the eyes.

Myth: Only ageing causes dark circles

Fact: The skin under the eyes is one of the thinnest and most delicate areas of the human body. Therefore, dark circles and under-eye hollows can be caused by a variety of factors.

These include but are not limited to allergies, medications, anaemia, excessive sun exposure, poor sleeping habits, dehydration and sleep.

Ageing is just one of the causes these issues. This is why even young people in their early twenties also complain of dark circles under their eyes!

Myth: Getting more sunlight will alleviate dark circles

Fact: Many people mistakenly believe that more sunlight exposure can improve the appearance of dark circles. However, this is not true.

Too much sun exposure in fact weakens the delicate skin around the eye area and actually makes it more susceptible to dark circles.

Because of this, it is best to protect the skin around your eyes by applying sunscreen and shielding your eyes by wearing protective eyewear or a hat when you are outside.
