How to Get Rid of Under Eye Dark Circles (And What Causes Them)

Last Modified: July 14, 2024

When it comes to cosmetic maladies, few are as common as dark eye circles. These blackish-blue spots arise for a variety of reasons. However, regardless of why they appear, they all have on thing in common: they're hugely detrimental to the aesthetic of the person who has them.

Are you dealing with this problem? Wondering how to get rid of under eye dark circles? This article has all the information you need.

What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes?

Dark circles under eyes can be caused by a number of factors. The most common of these factors include the following.

Ageing

In many cases, dark eye circles come about due to ageing. As a person ages, his or her skin will become thinner. As a result, the dark blood vessels under his or her eyes might start to show through his or her skin.

While not all individuals develop these circles as they age, a good many do. Often times, it's a genetic predisposition.

Genetics

In some cases, as we alluded to above, the answer to dark eye circles is as simple as genetics. Some individuals are quite simply predisposed to have dark circles under their eyes. There are also some genetic ailments that can cause dark eye circles, including thyroid disease.

Fatigue

One of the most common causes of dark circles under the eyes is fatigue. Whether this fatigue is from overworking, sleep deprivation, or otherwise, it can have a seismic cosmetic effect on the area underneath the eyes.

Dehydration

Another common cause of dark eye circles is dehydration. When the body becomes dehydrated, the blood vessels start to protrude. Because the skin under the eyes is so thin, the blood vessels underneath them often show through, presenting as dark spots.

Allergies

In some cases, allergies will cause the skin beneath the eyes to become dark. This happens when histamines are released into the body, causing the blood vessels to expand and show through the skin.

Alcohol Consumption

Another cause of dark under-eye circles is alcohol consumption. Those who drink alcohol on a regular basis are more prone to developing dark spots under their eyes.

Why is this? There are a number of reasons. Not only does alcohol dilate the blood vessels, making them easier to see through the skin, but it also causes dehydration, which—as was noted above—tends to lead to the formation of dark circles under the eyes.

How to Get Rid of Under Eye Dark Circles

There are a number of different ways to get rid of under-eye dark circles, some of which are more effective than others. We'll discuss the most effective methods below.

Apply a Cold Compress

One of the first things you should do to treat dark circles under your eyes is to apply a cold compress. A cold compress will help by reducing swelling and shrinking expanded blood vessels.

Do this two to three times a day for 20 minutes at a time. Over time, you're bound to see results. Note, however, that some individuals will see better results than others.

Use Concealer

While it's not exactly a permanent solution, you can conceal your under-eye circles with, well, concealer. Note, however, that if you have bags under your eyes as well, concealer won't do much to make them go away.

Get Your Sleep

As was noted above, dark eye circles often come as a result of sleep deprivation. If your circles are caused by a lack of sleep, you can counteract them by simply getting more sleep.

Ideally, you should be getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night. That said, some individuals might need a little more sleep than others.

Drink Ample Water

If you're like many human beings existing in the world today, you're not drinking enough water. This could very well be the cause of your dark eye circles. If it is, you know exactly what you have to do: you have to up your water consumption.

The NHS recommends that you drink 6 to 8 8-ounce glasses of water every day. However, depending on your size and the surrounding circumstances, you might have to drink even more.

Use Plenty of Pillows

In some cases, fluid will flow down into the area under the eyes while a person is sleeping, resulting in blackened spots. The cause of this? A lack of head elevation.

The remedy? In most cases, a few extra pillows. By placing a few extra pillows under your head at night, you'll elevate it, keeping fluid from flowing into the areas under your eyes.

Tear Trough Filler Procedure

The most effective way to treat dark spots under the eyes is to undergo a tear trough filler procedure. This is a procedure wherein a dermal filler is injected into the area directly below the eye. It adds depth to the area, therefore better covering the blood vessels that result in dark spots.

Tear trough filler procedures are essentially painless. While you might feel a slight bit of discomfort during the procedure, it's minimal and won't last long.

The results will last for months and will even help direct moisture to the areas under your eyes. This will result in increased hydration, limiting the risk of dark spots popping up again.
